Khadija is an award-winning communicator working at the nexus of public outreach, engagement and research — weaving stories of community empowerment as she goes. She has been involved in various projects promoting civic engagement and co-operation with science across multiple sectors of society, including the London-based Citizen Sense project, the UK-wide Home Biome Study, DustSafe and, more recently, Jalview, a critically acclaimed not-for-profit initiative operating at the heart of Scotland to bring free STEM education to schools worldwide. A big fan of the movies, Khadija has collaborated with filmmaker Erica Monde from the Imprint Documentary Collective to raise suicide awareness in Scotland and volunteered her expertise to the Royal Society-funded Daffodil DNA Project as well as Clarus — an innovative new collaboration funded by the European Union into the effective use of language in digital forensics investigations.

Using a mix of websites, social, video, print and audio media, as well as face-to-face outreach, Khadija has used the art of persuasion to champion ideas worth spreading to motivate audiences based in the UK — and beyond. In recognition of her efforts towards public engagement, she was jointly awarded the John Ziman prize in 2018 by the European Association for the Study of Science and Technology.
